Short history about winegums
The journey of the wine gum started in 1880 where the English man Charles Riley Maynard started his confectionary business along with
his brother Tom. However, it was not until 1909 that the Maynard’s wine gums were introduced by Maynard’s son Charles Gordon Maynard. The story goes, that Maynard Senior was close to fire his son from the business in the period of inventing the wine gums. Maynard Senior and Junior were having disputes over the invention of the delicious gum. Because, it took a long time to persuade Maynard senior who was a highly conservative Christian that there were no wine to be found in their produced wine gums, despite from the quite misleading name.
Why the popular jellies were given wine gums is hard to say and a bit of a mystery. However, two strong theories have come to light, one being an attempt to lure people away from alcohol and the other being the texture of these gums making them superior to other confectionaries allowing you to savor them like a fine wine.
